Traveling on a bus for the last four days has given me plenty of time to think. I created this run to celebrate turning 30 so I thought it would be fitting to make a list of 30 lessons I’ve learned/or principles that I try to live by in my life. By no means am I accomplishing all of these. It is a work in process, but I’m a firm believer in trying to understand how you want to live your life and documenting it. These lessons have been taught to me my a number of people.
So in no particular order, I present to you 30 lessons I’ve learned in 30 years.
- Don’t wait for major announcements, changes, successes or hardships in one’s life to let that person know that you care about him/her
- Secrets don’t make friends
- Say thanks often to those who add value to your life
- Laughing at least 10 times a day will keep you young
- Simplifying life will make you happier
- Fake it before you make it
- Why do something tomorrow when you can do it today
- Be quirky
- Read
- Adopting a pet will bring joy to your life
- To give is to receive
- People say that if you have six great friends when you die, you’re lucky. I’d say you’re not trying hard enough.
- Never stop learning
- The less political you are, the better relationships you’ll have
- One man is no man
- Save for your future
- Rather than trying to balance work and play, strive to remove the difference between the two
- Explore the world
- Help others reach their goals
- Humility is like underwear, essential, but indecent if it shows
- The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself, the more energy you will have.
- Respect your elders
- Do what you say you’re going to do
- Be on time
- Challenge yourself
- Don’t be a critic
- Learn about who you are and what makes you tick
- Teach others
- Build things
- If you see a problem, don’t complain, find a solution
A Good Run 
In your effort to get a few more… Here’s one I’ve found throughout the years: Even the smallest gestures of kindness can make a huge impact.
