From February 23 – March 1, 2012, I (Steve Good) celebrated turning 30 by running 65 miles in eight states in eight days and spent $65 in transportation costs via Megabus. The journey took me from Des Moines to Washington, DC (with stops in Chicago, Indy, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, NYC and Baltimore) via Megabus, and I was able to raise $1,500 for the Iron Phi program that benefits The ALS Association and the Phi Delta Theta Foundation.
Because my initial trip was such a blast, I decided that the run should become an annual adventure. In 2013, I ran 61 miles in eight cities in eight days, including Fort Dodge (IA), Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, Oxford (MS), Birmingham, Atlanta and Athens (GA), and raised $2,100+ for Iron Phi.
I’ve learned that exploring a city by foot, publicly thanking those who support you, and doing this while raising funds for a good cause is a liberating experience. People are proud of their cities and have causes that they support. A Good Run has turned into a platform for runners to show off their cities, thank important people in their lives and recognize a cause that they support. To join us, send an email to sgood@grassrootgive.com or leave a comment on this page with the city you’d like to run. Your contribution will be posted when the following things have been completed and received.
Requirements to have your run published:
- A headshot photo
- The run must have between five and ten stops along the route. I don’t care how long or short the run is. At each stop, you must capture a picture of the landmark and in the process thank somebody with a thank you sign. You must write about why you stopped where you stopped and why you thanked who you thanked. I would recommend that you bring a running buddy along to take your pictures. It is also encouraged to incorporate a good restaurant in that city, either during or after the run.
- You must donate to your favorite cause prior to the run. I will take your word for it. Within your post, you’ll have the opportunity to write about your cause.
- You must submit a picture of your route to be included in the post. This can be done with MapMyRun, RunKeeper, Nike + or Google Maps. We want other people to be able to run your route!

Aug. 13 or 27 in St. Louis looks like it would be a good fit on your calendar.
March 28th, 2012 at 10:55 pm
Brooke, I’m not running in all of these cities. I’m asking others to run their city and contribute to the blog by submitting a blog post of their run. I’d love to run St. Louis (as well as all of these cities) but the reality is I cant!

I’m in Steve! Love collaborating with another fellow Iowan for a good cause, even if we are on opposing sides of the Cy-Hawk game:) Thanks so much for the invite to include me on this project! Count me in for Manhattan Beach, California! If it needs to be a bigger city, I can do Los Angeles as it is only 15 miles away from my town. Dec 10th if it’s not taken yet!
March 29th, 2012 at 8:08 pm
Yes! Hawkeyes are welcome. Well, in small batches. Kidding. Cedar Rapids is great. I’m originally from Fort Dodge and live in Ames currently. I’ve got you down for December 10. Manhattan Beach is great. Will you shoot me an email at sgood@grassrootgive.com just so I have it? Also, if you could, send me a head shot attached to that email. You’re the man.

Put David Wyble and Ally Browning down for September 17. We will be running through the glorious metropolis of St. Joseph, Missouri. She has been training for a half marathon and has been running 40-50 miles a week so right now I just want to plan on keeping up with her. We will have more details later.
April 2nd, 2012 at 4:18 pm
Alright! You are marked down.

If the run this weekend goes well (I’m doing the Reho run tomorrow during my trip), I might be able to help out with another later in the year. I’m supposed to go to London in October, so that could make for a good pictoral….
April 22nd, 2012 at 8:40 pm
My blog is your blog. Feel free to do as many runs as you’d like!

[...] Basically what I’ll be doing this weekend is running a route in Raleigh and stopping at my favorite landmarks along the way (stores, restaurants, museums, etc.). Mario will take a picture of me at each stop and then I’ll write a post about the places and why they are important to me. I will also share a map of the run and that way if anyone visits the Raleigh area, they will already have a route mapped out that includes some cool places. Finally, I will mention the charity that is important to me and explain why I am supporting it. You can read more about it here. [...]

Steve,
I’d like to grab January 21 if possible, representing San Jose, Costa Rica. I’ll be prepping for my first half marathon, the ING Miami on January 27. So I should easily be in ‘full running mode’ during that time frame.
I’m going to post an article and link on my blog regarding this also. You’ve got a great idea going here.
July 11th, 2012 at 10:50 pm
Awesome! Costa Rica will be wonderful. What’s your full name so I can add it to the calendar? Glad to have you on board and thanks for the kind words.

I’m currently nursing an achilles tendon injury, but fully expect to be back in action well before the date. If for any reason I come to doubt that, I will let you know with as much time as possible so you can fill that time slot.
